I think this book by Mary Pickford is a fascinating read (or an awkward listen). It is a personal testimonial from one person's life who seemed to be extraordianrily self-centered otherwise... and yet at times she was definitely in touch with that inner source. It was first published in 1934 just about the time her acting career was finished for she never made the adjustment from the silent films to talkies (although she was a powerful force in Hollywood until her death having been one of the founders of United Artists and a great deal more).

I'm linking a site that shares a clickable facsimile of the original book and provides a robo-reader as well if you can stand the voice.
