To frame his points David describes the development of two athletes both of whom became the best in the world (do read the beginning of the article to find out who the are) and arrived there by completely different paths. He then goes on to describe a bit about a number of exceptional people whose lives included many disparate threads all of which came together to yield extraordinary results.
